Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site

The Soviet Union’s nuclear plan started shortly after the halt of the Second World War. Tests were conducted inwards many remote regions such equally the Russian archipelago of Novaya Zemlya , the Urals as well as the steppes of northeastern Kazakhstan. Unfortunately , non all of these sites were devoid of human habitation.

One of the primary sites selected for testing was the xviii ,000-square-km Semipalatinsk Test Site , too known equally "The Polygon" , situated due south of the valley of the Irtysh River , inwards Kazakhstan. Just 150 km due east of the exam site was the town of Semipalatinsk (later renamed Semey) amongst a population exceeding 100 ,000 individual. Hundreds of thousands to a greater extent than lived inside an eighty km radius inwards numerous scattered villages.
