Fliegeberg: Otto Lilienthal’s ‘Fly Mountain’

One of the major inspiration to the Wright brothers was the function of High German pioneer of aviation , Otto Lilienthal , who repeatedly together with successfully demonstrated the possibility of heavier-than-air flying machines to a greater extent than than 10 years earlier the American brothers took to the air. To demonstrate these flights , Otto Lilienthal built an artificial conical loma inward 1894 close his habitation inward Lichterfelde , or together with then 600 meters due north of Berlin urban center limits. Called Fliegeberg , or the “Fly Mountain” , it allowed Lilienthal to launch his gliders into the current of air no affair which administration it was coming from. The loma is fifteen meters high together with even together with then stands equally a memorial to Lilienthal.

Lilienthal started edifice together with testing gliders inward 1891. Initially he used a loma close the villages of Krielow together with Derwitz from which he used to natural springtime together with glide downwards roofing distances of almost 25 meters. Lilienthal was also able to purpose the updraft of the current of air against a loma to rest stationary amongst honor to the ground.

In 1892 , Lilienthal moved to some other loma formation inward Steglitz , close Berlin. He built a 4 meters tall jumping platform at the exceed giving him an effective tiptop of almost 10 meters.  In 1893 , Lilienthal used some other loma inward Rhinow from which he was able to arrive at flying distances equally long equally 250 meters — a tape which remained unbeaten at the fourth dimension of his death.

Lilienthal tried several other preparation areas exterior of Berlin until he decided to construct his ain loma inward Lichterfelde , on the site of a onetime brickyard , together amongst his blood brother Gustav. Lilienthal conducted to a greater extent than than a chiliad examination flights from Fliegeberg , attracting a regular crowd of people. His best recorded distance at Fliegeberg was fourscore meters.

During his brusque flying career , Lilienthal developed a dozen models of monoplanes , wing flapping aircraft together with ii biplanes. His gliders were carefully designed to distribute weight equally evenly equally possible to ensure a stable flight. Lilienthal controlled them yesteryear changing the pump of gravity yesteryear shifting his trunk , much similar modern hang gliders. However they were hard to maneuver together with had a vogue to pitch downwards , from which it was hard to recover. One argue for this was that he held the glider yesteryear his shoulders , rather than hanging from it similar a modern hang glider. Only his legs together with lower trunk could endure moved , which express the total of weight shift he could achieve. This pocket-size blueprint flaw proved fatal.

On ix August 1896 , Lilienthal was conducting tests at Rhinow Hills when his glider pitched forwards together with headed direct downwards to the ground. Lilienthal never got a conduct chances to gain command of the glider. He brutal from a tiptop of fifteen meters , breaking his neck. He died 36 hours later. His concluding words to his blood brother Gustav were "Opfer müssen gebracht werden!" (Sacrifices must endure made!).

In 1932 , the Fliegeberg was redesigned equally a memorial to Lilienthal together with his preparation dry reason became Lilienthalpark. On exceed of the loma , stands a bronze Blue Planet inscribed amongst Otto Lilienthal’s cite together with particulars of his famous flights.
